Capt Unger served with the 345th Tactical Airlift Squadron, 374th Tactical Airlift Wing, 13th Air Force.
On 3 May 1972, a C-130 (#62-1797) was shot down wy AAA while on a night drop aerial resupply mission at An Loc, SVN. Six crewmen were killed. The crew members were recovered after the battle was over,listed as died while missing. Their remains were individually identified two years later.
