Lt. Brown's F-100 was shot down near the A Shau Valley on July 14, 1968. He was able to eject from his aircraft, but his chute became entangled. He was found by a helicopter rescue crew. He was the only combat death suffered by the Sioux City-based 185th Tactical Fighter Group, Iowa Air National Guard and the first National Guard pilot shot down in Vietnam.
A memorial for Lt. Warren Brown was constructed at the Sioux Gateway Airport.
