Reflections on SSgt Owens's US Air Force Service

 Reflections On My Service

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE AIR FORCE.
There is no greater honor then the service of ones country. It is a tradition in our family to serve. My great grandfather of 8 or 9 generations ago served with General Washington during the Revolutionary War. My grandfather Ephraim Webster was one of many who served since the 17th century.

In 1777, at age 15, he served as a private in George Washington's Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. During his time in service, he was called on by the commanders of Fort Ticonderoga in New York to volunteer with another soldier to swim Lake Champlain and carry dispatches to General Lincoln near Mount Independence, Vermont. The trip was a distance of 2 miles (3.2 km) and took place in the late autumn when the water was already quite cold. The two soldiers departed one evening and feared they would not make it alive. Webster completed the duty, however, nearly lost his life and had to be rescued by his companion, Wallace of Thetford.

The contents of the dispatch are unknown. How many 15-year-olds today would ever consider doing such a thing for their nation.

My more recent grandfather served in both WW I and WW II as a Tail Gunner. My father served during WW II on board a surface ship. My older brother served in the Navy during the Cold War on board a Nuclear Submarine. I had always wanted to serve in the Air Force. One reason is that I've always loved flying. Serving is in our blood.

We are Patriots. What more reason do I need.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BASIC TRAINING AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
Started out as a 70251B at Wright Patterson AFB, ASD. This was most favorite duty station and the best job I ever had. I started working at the F-15 Systems Programming Office and was transferred to the F-16 Systems Programming Office. My life was simple. I was married to my high school sweetheart and was very happy. I had my whole life ahead of me and was very ambitious and driven. But the one thing I lacked was guidance. I also worked at the AIM-9 Side Winder Program Office, volunteered for the Security Police Augmentee. Due to youthful stupidity, I hadn't realized how good I had it there nor did I know that the 702 AFSC would eventually morph into an IT job in the Air Force. Had I known that I would have never left Wright Patterson.

I was young and wanted adventure. I wanted to see the real Air Force so I retested in the ASVAB. Scored a 96 and was told I could have any job I wanted. So I told the sergeant at the personnel office that I wanted fighters. Was approved and attended Tactical Fighter Bomber Maintenance School at Sheppard AFB. Upon graduation, I was assigned PCS to the 72 Tactical Fighter Squadron at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL.
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
I have very fond memories of both Wright Patterson AFB and MacDill AFB. I will add more to this later.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
Being promoted to Sergeant.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
Good Conduct Medal because it speaks to my character and those of my generation raised by the WWII generation. There is very little of this anymore.
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
Master Sergeant Perryman, William (or Bill) MacIntosh and a Loadmaster whom I got to know while stationed in Area B, ASD Wright Patterson AFB 1979-1983. Wish I knew if my friend Bill was still alive and would like to reconnect with him.
CAN YOU RECOUNT A PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM YOUR SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MAKES YOU LAUGH?
Yes - while stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL as an F16 Crew Chief I was launching my bird on what seemed a normal day, but when I signaled to the pilot to turn and continue to taxi out of the parking spot I forgot that I left the maintenance log book open on top of the tool chest. When the aircraft turned to taxi out the jet blast blew the papers everywhere. The super in the crew truck laughed for days.
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
I attended Airframe and Powerplant school but wasn't able to finish due to cost so I attended another school and made a long career in IT (Information Technology).
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
The discipline, focus, determination and teamwork I learned while serving in the military has helped me achieve many accomplishments throughout my not so fun private sector career. It helped me be a more responsible adult and really came in handy when I had to raise my three children after my first wife died while she was only 26 years old.

Always giving my very best in everything I do.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE AIR FORCE?
Stay in the service, don't leave no matter what, milk that opportunity for all it's worth, never turn down any kind of training, get as many medals, ribbons and achievements as you can and get that pension.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM HELPED YOU REMEMBER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS YOU SERVED WITH.
SSgt Eric Owens (Badger) - In what ways has TogetherWeServed.com helped you remember your military service and the friends you served with.
TWS and the US Air Force
It hasn't because I can't connect with anyone I served with as I cannot find them on the Internet nor do I have the money to pay a PI to find them so I can connect. I have not talked with any member I have served with since 1985. I wish I could.
