What are you doing now: I am no longer working for a living. I collect Social Security Disability and a small VA compensation from an injury I received in Thailand. I had to quit working as an automotive and equipment mechanic because my knees and back, wore out from arthritis and degenerative disc disease. The VA replaced both knees for me and did a very nice job. I have just started collecting a pension from the county so I am officially retired.
I am the house husband and that keeps me busy. I also am a volunteer guardian for two people. I visit them and go to staffing meetings regarding their care and placement.
I am a volunteer Hunter Education Instructor;certified by' the Wisconsin DNR. I have a small group of instructors and we usually give two classes a year. When I left the reserve, I missed teaching. I have been teaching Hunter Ed since 1996.

Other Comments: I have been a mechanic all my life. I started as a boy fixing my bicycle and then my friends bikes. Pretty soon, I was fixing bikes for the whole neighborhod. As I grew older, I worked in service stations and learned some of the basic auto repairs. After high school, I drove a truck until I went into the Air Force.
One of the things I wanted from the AF was to work on airplanes. I went to school for jet fighters. I worked on the F-106 at Minot AFB for a year and a half. Then I went to Thailand for a year and worked on F-4E Phantoms. I asked to go to England and they sent me there for two years working on F-4D's.
After I was discharged, I went to automotive school for a year. I then started working on cars and trucks for the next almost 30 years.
I was a civilian for six years before joining the AF Reserve. I became a Combat Arms Instructor. I learned how to teach a class and the subject was something I loved being around...guns. I became good at this and earned an AF Comendation Medal for developing and making tools and training aids as well as supporting other bases in our Numbered Air Force in California, Hawaii, and Michigan. I worked my way up to the Superintendent position and had a great team of instructors to work with and for.
After 12 years in the reserve and with three to go for 20, my wife became very sick and 'I'had to make a hard decision. I left the reserve to take care of her and gave up my career. She eventually passed away but I was unable to go back to finish. I have no regrets. I also have many fond memories and had many great experiences in the years I spent in the Air Force, both active and reserve.
