Officials at Grand Forks Air Force Base have identified a 22-year-old airman who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound last week.
Airman Cory McCord, a patrolman with the 319th Security Forces Squadron, was at work around noon Friday when the incident occurred, base officials said in a news release Wednesday.
Several of McCord’s co-workers were present and spoke with him as they tried to stop him from killing himself, the release states.
Air Force security personnel, Grand Forks County sheriff’s deputies and paramedics responded to the scene. McCord was taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Officials said more information would be released once an investigation into the incident is completed.
In an e-mail, base spokesman Tech. Sgt. Joseph Kapinos said McCord of Troy, Ala., had been in the Air Force since June 2006 and was deployed to Afghanistan from March to September of 2009.
