First Lieutenant Atkinson was the navigator served with the 13th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Wing out of Kunsan Airfield (K-8), South Korea as a B-26C "Invader" flight engineer.
While on a night intruder mission during the evening of 14 July 1953, his aircraft was lost between Sinanju and Pyongyang, North Korea.

Fred Franklin Atkinson, Jr. was born in El Paso, El Paso, Texas, son of Fred Franklin Atkinson and Hazel Marguerett Wiley. In 1930 he lived with his parents in Moore, Texas. He graduated from New Mexico A&M College (which in 1960 became New Mexico State University) in 1951 as part of the ROTC Army Air Programs.
