He flew B-17's in the Pacific in (1941?) 1942, was shot down but made it back to his unit and then flew missions from Guadalcanal. After leave time, he became commander of the 361st Fighter Group from Feb 10, 1943 until his death Aug 12, 1944.
He is believed to be buried in Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France. He is also memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupre, Belgium as well as at the Texas State Cemetery, Austin, TX.
He was also the great-grandson of Civil War General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.
