Retired Air Force after twenty-three years, March 1994. Wonderful opportunity and experience. I went into the pawn shop business with a partner in Danville, VA for two years, then sold my interest in February 1996. I opened my own pawn shop in Prince George, VA, in April 1996. Same business, two locations, for the past thirty one years. An interesting and rewarding profession. My business is located next to Fort Lee, VA. I enjoy my contact with active duty and retired military members in the central Virginia area. At age 75, I'm in my 58th consecutive year of continuous work. There is no high year of tenure and too many benefits. Post-Air Force life couldn't have been better. I considered full retirement in 2024. Decided to change from full-time to part-time, converting to a thrift store, CA$H 4 STUFF, LLC. Fewer days, and fewer hours. I'm looking forward to more flexibility with a new work routine in 2025. I'm so thankful for a lifetime of opportunities.
Other Comments:
Great twenty three Air Force career. Aircraft maintenance and recruiting duty were very rewarding. Recruiting duty was an exceptional experience. Great assignments, promotions, decorations, and recognition. Several years over twenty, it was time to pursue something different. Civilian life and self-employment were the right decisions. On the personal side, my wife Debey and I have been married fifty-three years, no kids. Life, past and present, is simple and mostly uneventful, but very rewarding. Debey and I are so blessed. So many facets of our lives have fit together like a completed puzzle. We live in Chester, Virginia (south Richmond), within several hours of our families. Everything is wonderful, and we're content to live here forever.
Reflection: I'll always have fond memories of my Air Force experiences and career, places I've been, and those I've met along the way. The Air Force was a wonderful experience, career, and opportunity. Well-prepared when I retired in 1994 and elected self-employment. I'm a firm believer, "the harder you work, the luckier you get". I'm enjoying post Air Force life and work. I've been retired 31 years, longer than I served on active duty. Both great opportunities.
I salute everyone that "honorably" served our country.
