Major Steinbrunner went on active duty in 1966, and was shot in the knee during an earlier mission.
He and his crew were lost during a "Ranch Hand" defoliation operation southwest of Quang Ngai. He was the navigator of UC-1123B (#54-0630) which was brought down by small arms fire.
