Last Known Activity
A2C Joseph R. Morin was Killed in Action while engaged with the enemy in Korea on 1 November 1950. He was killed near (K-2) Taegu AFB, Korea by a land mine explosion during combat. He had volunteered to assist in the search for a downed pilot. While on the return to base, he dismounted from his jeep and stepped on a mine. The incident occurred 6 miles south of Hapchon, Kyongsang Namdo, South Korea. He was the first USAF policeman killed in the line of duty since the creation of the Air Force in 1947. He was 22 years of age at his death. He served with the 49th Air Police Squadron, 49th Fighter Bomber Group, 5th Air Force in Taegu. (This became the 6149th Tactical Support Wing during October and November 1950). In his memory, a gate at the present 51st Fighter Wing USAF base (Osan, Korea) was renamed J.R. Morin Gate in 2008.
