Last Known Activity
He died in a plane crash when the C-119 Flying Boxcar cargo plane he was co-piloting was hit by ground fire while parachuting a howitzer to the besieged French garrison at Dien Bien Phu.  He and the pilot, James B. "Earthquake McGoon" McGovern Jr., were the only Americans to die in combat in the First Indochina War. The day after the crash, the garrison at Dien Bien Phu surrendered.
The location of his remains is unknown.
