Officer of the USAAF, born March 31, 1923 at Pulsaki (Tennessee), Robert Abernathy joined the Army Reserve and serves as Air Cadet before qualifying as a pilot. Promoted Lieutenant February 8, 1944 at the same time he gets his wings at Luke Field (Arizona), he was assigned to the 350th Fighter Squadron / 353rd Fighter Group August 20, 1944. At the end of the month, totaling 332 hours of flight with 220 initial training. During the stay he made ????in this unit, he won five confirmed victories in aerial combat. He left the USAAF in October 1945 after being awarded the DFC and 13 Air Medals.
