In 1957, Major Harland Davis received his commission in the U.S. Air Force, Greenville AFB, Mississippi. (Note: Greenville was a pilot training base for single engine aircraft).

He completed one tour of duty in Vietnam in 1965, and returned for another tour on 13 June 1972.

On 7 July 1972, while returning from a night mission during a heavy rainstorm to Ubon RTAFB, Major Davis and his WSO, 1st Lt. Fred Koss, were killed when his F-4 Phantom crashed approximatley three miles from the field.
