Major Diamond's F-105D (#59-1755) was shot down by a MiG-17 flown by Vo Van Man of the 923rd Fighter Regiment on way to POL target over Phuc Yen, 15 miles north of Hanoi.  

Major Diamond ejected and was severely injured in the ejection phase. 

He died while missing, though reported shot down and killed by the North Vietnamese government at Paris 6 September 1976.

His remains were returned 18 March 1977.
