Capt. Fox enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 after graduation from Metamora High School. He recieved a comission as a Lt. in 1955 and served Stateside and in Germany and the Phillipines. At 0815 hrs on Sunday morning, May 16, 1965, Captain Charles Nathan Fox and his Navigator, Captain Vernon L. Haynes were sitting in their B-57B Tail Number 53-3904 about to start engines to lead a flight of four aircraft on a strike mission against the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Fox's Canberra was loaded with four 750 Lbs. bombs under the wings and nine 500 Lbs. bombs in the bomb bay. Without warning a time delay fuse on one of the bombs malfunctioned and Fox's aircraft exploded setting off a chain reaction that destroyed 10 USAF aircraft and killed 27  men. A1C Darryl Gordon Winters (KIA 7/19/66) was a combat photgrapher for the 600th  Photo Sqdrn at Bien Hoa who shot footage and took the photo in this profile, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions that unforgotten day.

The Investigation concluded in part that the aircraft and Ammo and Fuel were stored to close to each other which allowed fire and explosions to propagate. The bombers were loaded with bombs that had anti-withdraw-time delay fuses.
