Last Known Activity
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1957, Captain Careiss was trained in the A-1E at Hurlburt Field, Florida (Eglin Air Force Aux 9), Skyraider Class "Express 03" prior to his assignment at Bien Hoa. Capt. Gareiss was the IP and  Capt. Thomas C. McEwen the training pilot on an evaluation/tng flight  of a A-1E Skyrader 52-132471  The aircraft entered a spin at 3000 feet while executing an acrobatic maneuver and struck the ground in a flat attitude and exploded 15 miles SE Bien Hoa.  Crash was attributed to pilot error. Hobson Vietnam Air Losses.



Both Captain Gareiss and Capt. McEwen were killed in the crash.
