Last Known Activity First Lieutenant Goodman was killed in South Vietnam on 9 January 1967 on a flare and gun support mission. A small special forces camp was under attack and called for air support. As a copilot, Goodman came to the rescue flying low (below the 2000 ft. cloud deck) and firing on the enemy. He continued these passes until his plane was hit by hostile ground fire, caught on fire, and crashed.
On another occasion, he was honored by the Vietnamese Chief of State Nguyen Van Thieu and was cited for supporting the US Coast Guard cutter Point League when it came under machine gun fire while stationed at Binh Thuy Air Base. He was a pilot on the AC-47 Dragon Ship and with his crew, he protected Point League until the US-Vietnam Army forces arrived and simultaneously aided the capture of an enemy ship.
He was awarded the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Silver Star for his acts on that day. His other military decorations include nine Air Medals, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Purple Heart, and two Distinguished Flying Crosses for his heroism and achievements.
He had flown over 105 missions in the AC-47 aircraft at the time of his death.
