Lt. Col.William Kieffer served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, enlisting on 3 April 1943.  He was a B-24 pilot and was in the Pacific just as the War ended.  He served again during the Korean War, though not in country.

Lt. Col. Kieffer served with the 1st Special Operations Squadron, 56th Special Operations Wing at Nakhon Phanom RTAFB, Thailand.

He was lost on 11 February 1970, when his A-1E aircraft crashed near Pek District, Xiangkhoang Province, Laos.

His remains were recovered in 2007 and identified on 26 April 2010.
