Captain Martin was a Lopez Forward Air Controller assigned to Danang as an O-2A FAC.

He was killed on the ground in Quang Nam Province South Vietnam when there was a hostile rocket attack on the base and he was struck while in the alert section of a command post bunker.

He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal, and the Purple Heart. He was awarded the Silver Star as an FAC in Southeast Asia on 4 May 1968 on a mission to rescue a friendly force ground team who was surrounded by a larger hostile force. Through his outstanding direction of close air support, and despite heavy ground fire and poor weather conditions, he caused the hostile force to withdraw and successfully extracted friendly forces.

Captain Martin was interred at Beaver Dam, Kentucky and his name is on the memorial wall at the Academy.Captain Martin's name is on the memorial wall at the Academy.
