Last Known Activity

Capt. Robert L. Weskamp was born on independence day, July 4, 1942, in Arvada Colorado. He entered Officer Training School at Lackland AFB Texas on November 12, 1964, and was Commissioned a 2nd Lt. on Feburary 10, 1965. After completeing UPT and F-105 Combat Crew training, he was assigned to the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing at Takhli,AB, Thailand. Capt. Weskamp flew missions over Southeast Asia from December 1966 until forced to eject over North Vietnam on April 25, 1967 from an F-105D (62-4294) after taking fire from "Triple A"  while enroute to the Hanoi Transformer Station at RP-6A.  Capt. Weskamp was immediately taken prisioner but died of his injuries the same day.  Monitored transmissions from his EGRESS radio stated his last words were "SPARE MY LIFE". Voices of Vietnam Radio indicated Capt. Weskamp was injured during shootdown and died on the operating table trying to save his life. (?)
Capt. Weskamp's remains were returned to the United States on March 6, 1974. He was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Wheat Ridge Colorado.

   
Comments/Citation

His SILVER STAR Citation reads:

Capt. Robert Larry Weskamp distinguished himself by gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-105 pilot in Southeast Asia on April 25, 1967. On that date, while under intense and accurate fire from unfriendly forces, Captain Weskamp demonstrated cool courage, undauted determination, and superior skill in pressing home devastating air attacks against hostile positions. Persevering in the face of danger, he relentlessly and effectively aided in neutralizing the hostile forces. By his gallantry and devotion to duty in the dedication of his service to his country, Captain Weskamp has reflected great credit on himself and the United Stattes Air Force.
