Memories For This Unit

Best Moment
Working on the J1 Jenny aircraft prior it going to Wright Pat. Air Force museum.

Worst Moment
The base suddenly closing while I was TDY to Stewart AFB, NY. Stewart AFB closed and I came back to Selfridge AFB, Mi only to find it had closed and everyone was gone and no one knew what to do with me. So a couple weeks later I was told to go to Wurtsmith AFB, MI and orders would be cut at a later date.

Chain of Command
Headquarters 1st Fighter Wing (ADC)
1st Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (ADC)

Other Memories
I didn't realized Lake St. Clare was one of the Great Lakes.
Also about one week after I arrived on base everyone who was new to the base was volunteered to march through Detroit to show a little military strength I suppose. This was right after the Detroit Riots of 1968. No one wanted to volunteer so we were selected. I didn't survive Vietnam only to be shot in Detroit, MI. So I briefed the platoon and marched them. Everyone obeyed me perfectly and even though we encountered activists spitting on us and brandishing clubs, bricks and other weapons. We remained unscathed and was successful. I thanked everyone and told them to immediately get their uniforms cleaned.
