The SAGE system was a network linking Air Force (and later FAA) General Surveillance Radar stations into a centralized center for Air Defense, intended to provide early warning and response for a Soviet nuclear attack. The Ground Air Transmitting Receiving (GATR) Site (R-18) for communications was located at approximately 1.1 miles souh-southwest from the SAGE building. Normally the GATR site was connected by a pair of buried telephone cables, with a backup connection of dual telephone cables overhead.
DC-18 was initially under the San Francisco Air Defense Sector (SFADS), established on 15 February 1959. DC-18 and the SFADS was inactivated on 1 August 1963 as part of an ADC consolidation and reorganization, with its assigned units assigned to other ADC Sectors. The GATR was reassigned to Mill Valley AFS (Z-38) as an annex designated OL-A, 666th Radar Squadron. Today the large SAGE building is now building 2145, housing the 9th Reconnaissance Technical Squadron; the GATR was inactivated in 1980 and the building is now part of a Skeet-shooting range.

Worst Moment Having to fill out a bad APR on one of my Airmen, who was not bad,and a very good worker, but got caught using pot, and got an article 15.
Other Memories When I was first stationed at Otis AFB, I was assigned to the The Aero Repair Section. My first and lasting job while there was Aircraft Crash and Recovery. I remember going out to pick up a F-102 Delta Dagger that crashed about a mile off the end of the runway. They wanted the aircraft bought back as it was , so we loaded it unto a flat bed trailer and bought it back to the base. I was the driver of the truck hauling the Aircraft, we had to stop numerous times to cut down trees to clear the wings. The ground was soft and it was a task to get the truck moving again, we finally got the plane back to the base, had to stop so they could remove the fence, when I started up again the truck was having trouble moving as the clutch had burned up with hauling the Plane and all the stopping and starting up, but I did manage to get the Aircraft to a hanger. We went out many times to recover crashed aircraft, and it was difficult getting that 40 foot trailer through the narrow streets in the many small towns of Massachuestts, By the time I left the service at Otis AFB I was the night shift NCOIC of the Aero repair section.
