2nd Lt. Clarence E. Allen's left his base in England on a dive bombing mission to Aachen, Germany on October 12, 1944. The following witness account describes the circumstances leading to his status as Missing in Action:
"I was flying #4 in lead flight of 395th Ftr Sq. My flight attacked a Me 109 that was on the tail of a P-38. At this time I was attacked by 3 Me 109s. When I turned into them Lt. Allen, my element leader continued with rest of my flight. This was the last I saw of him and nobody else in the flight had any knowledge of seeing him anymore." Source: Statement, Willam J. Wayland, Jr, 2nd Lt, Missing Air Crew Report, War Department, Headquarters Army Air Forces, dated 14 October 1944
Further in the above Missing Air Crew Report there were several pages related to a Report on Captured Aircraft, the Thunderbolt being shot down on 12 Oct 1944, crashing in the center of Myhl, Germany. The pilot died. Each page has Clarence E. Allen and his military number written by hand across the page. My assumption is that someone later determined the captured aircraft was that of 2nd Lt. Allen
Note: The Panzer Dusters web site, http://www.368thfightergroup.com indicates that 2nd Lt. Clarence E. Allen's remains were recovered in 2004:
"2nd Lt. Clarence E. Allen
MIA 12 Oct 44 (remains recovered in 2004)
MACR #9645, Shot Down by Me-109 near Aachen, Germany
P-47D-20RE 42-76440"
In 2005 the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency exhumed the remains of an Unknown Soldier buried in Plot A Row 43 Grave 16 at Ardennes American Cemetery with the belief that an identification could be made. Research and analysis were used to positively identify the remains as belonging to 2nd Lt. Clarence E. Allen,

On July 26, 2007, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Second Lieutenant Clarence E. Allen, missing from World War II.
Second Lieutenant Allen entered the U.S. Army Air Forces from California and was a member of the 395th Fighter Squadron, 368th Fighter Group. On October 12, 1944, he was
the pilot of a single-seat P-47 Thunderbolt (serial number 42-76440) that took part in a dive bombing mission against enemy targets near Aachen, Germany. During the
mission, the flight engaged enemy aircraft in a dogfight, and 2LT Allen's aircraft was seen to crash in enemy territory. After the war, American Graves Registration Service
personnel disinterred the unidentifiable remains of an American serviceman at a cemetery in Myhl, Germany. These remain were reburied as an unknown at the Ardennes
American Cemetery in Neupre, Belgium. However, with the use of modern forensic techniques, and following up on the discovery of a P-47 crash site corresponding to 2LT
Allen's aircraft, investigators were able to identify these remains as his. Second Lieutenant Allen is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Netherlands American
Cemetery in Margraten.
