On that date, Sergeant Wharton skillfully dispatched his duties as a flight engineer on a mission to evacuate on ARVN soldier wounded by an unfriendly ambush. When the aircraft arrived at the ambush site, Sergeant Wharton painstakingly lowered the Medical Technican on the hoist down through the trees to assist the wounded soldier and then covered the area with his M-16 to prevent further outbreaks of hostile ground fire. His accurate planning and good judgement contributed greatly to the successful accomplishment of the mission.
