CARROLL distinguished himself by outstanding while participating in aerial flight as gunner of a B-26 attack bomber, 3rd Bombarment Wing (Light), Fifth Air Force. Airman Carroll displayed outstanding airmanship and gunnery skill while on low level armed reconnaissance over the enemy's main rail lines in North Korea on the night on 30 Dec 1952. Two locomotives were sighted in a marshalling yard and despite intense enemy antiaircraft and small arms fire were taken under attack in a series of low level bombing and strafing passes. Airman Carroll, utilizing superior gunnery skill , fired upon the target and ground fire positions and scored several direct hits. As a result of these aggressive and highly effective attacks, one locomotive was destroyed and one locomotive was severely damaged, depriving the enemy of vital rail transportation equipment. By his high skill, courage, and devotion to duty, Airman Carroll has brought great credit upon himself, his organization, and the United States Air Force. MoreHide
