Best Moment
To be assigned to flight line maintenance and be able to learn from some of the best NCO's and airmen just how to keep our planes flying. Our schooling, OJT training, and knowledge was designed around the APG model, or "Air plane General" concept, that is, to know the "total" airplane, and to maintain all systems of the aircraft. Later the Air Force changed to individual specilists for different parts or sections of the airplane such as power plant/engines, airframe, brakes, radios, hydraulics and etc. We did it all, and were blessed with good men.
Worst Moment
de-activation of our squadron; 7167th Air Transport (Medium) Special Air Missions. This was a tenant squadron, attached to Rhein-Main AB when I arrived in 1962. We had our own flight-line mechanics, flight engineers, radio operators, machnists, ground power technicians, and periodic inspection maintenance people. We were completly self-contained and self-sufficient to deploy as a squadron if needed. It was a tremendously satisfing feeling to work with such dedicated airmen.

I had a complete engine failure far from home base on my first flight as Crew Chief, and abandoned by pilots with instructions to "call us when it's fixed". A real test of my technical prepareness and ability to find /use resources at another Air Base. A complete engine change with minimum assistance did wonders for my confidence.

Received a bad sprain when I twisted my ankle on track during PT run and was concerned that I might not be allowed to continue and complete basic with my original fiight. Recruits were set-back in training for lots of reasons. No one wants to have "basic" last longer, and to miss finishing with your group.
