My last assignment which I consider the worst of my seventeen years in the air force. I ended up being the Chief of Maintenance of a MAC helicopter detachment on a SAC base. This could have been a choice assignment had it not been for a self centered major we had as commander! When I reported for duty at Ellsworth AFB, I informed the commander I had been nominated to attend the Senior NCO Academy and that I wanted to attend the first class that coming January. My intention was to get a shot of making E-9 and still retire with twenty years or at the most extend a year to sew it on. His comment was he wanted me to be there when the IG and MSET inspections to place later in the year. I stated in my defense, a master sargeant was running the maintenance shop in my absence, why would it be any different now. His logic had no merit.
His goal was to make LTC at any expense.

Pig Roast we had back in the woods picnic area! I was in charge of the night shift and on Fridays we woud come in to work and day shift folks would be grilling and drinking beer, having a good ol time. They would never say, "hey guys, we saved some burgers and beer, so when you get done, enjoy". Well, one day they just my goat and I gathered night shift folks and asked if they were willing to pitch in to purchase a 250 lb pig for a pig roast! Everyone said "hell yes", so the plan was set in motion. After all details and coordinating was done, we set a date and decided it was strictly Night Shift function! On set date, Friday, after day shift folks were gone, a group went out to the picnic area and setup the spit and pig. The guys broke up into teams to stay up all night turning the pig on the spit. It took 24 hrs to cook and we had families show up Saturday around 1600 hrs with side dishes and of course drinks of choice! We had a feast and was the talk for many days afterwards. Well, come Monday, when I showed up for the maintenance meeting, the commander called me into his office. He had heard about the pig roast and wanted to know why the whole squadron wasn't included. I told him what I had observed since being put on night shift and that we felt excluded from activities that took place on Fridays when beer and food flowed freely! He swallowed his pride and told me to never do that again!

When I arrived at Nha Thrang, Vietnam, where I had orders to report. Our commander initially interviewed eight of us who had just finished the CH-3E maintenance course and were assigned to the 20thSOS at Nha Thrang. He informed us not to even unpack our bags and that he needed us in Thailand at Udorn RTAFB to work on the CH-3E helicopters. We all said we had volunteered for Vietnam and not Thailand. We all were looking forward to the benies (combat pay, tax free and RR). Since we were coming from missile bases where we had worked on hueys, we felt we were being assigned to Nha Thrang where the hueys were operating. I ended up with the 20th SOS Pony Express out of Udorn RTAF and later merged with the 21stSOS out of NKP, Thailand.
