NORAD Exercise
13 of 17
from  1977-1978, 112X0, 41st Air Refueling Squadron  album
This pic was taken by my Co-Pilot during a mission to test NORAD ability to intercept enemy aircraft trying to penetrate the US air defenses from the Northeast. We were the "Russians" and they sent fighters to escort us out of US airspace. Our mission was somewhat of a marathon in flying time. We took off from upstate New York, had a rendezvous with a B52 for refueling, made a few approaches to Bangor, Maine Air Force Base, then flew toward Greenland, but didn't land there, broke radio contact with all stations, then came back toward Maine acting as if we were a Russian bomber. NORAD tried unsuccessfully to contact us and then scrambled fighters to intercept and identify us like they would in a real situation. We had a total of 27 hours of actual flight time with no landings in performance of this mission.
