Best Friends SSgt D. Lynn, Sgt W. Voyles, SSgt Boteilho, SSgt J. Johnson, DoD Guard Mr. Blackwell, who trained me as a desk sergeant.
Best Moment Any day that I got to ride patrol instead of working a gate.
A benefit of working midnight shift is that about 4:00am a patrol would stop at the base bakery (yeah, we used to have them) and pick up fresh baked cookies and pies for the cop shop.
On day shift a patrol would often times stop by one of the several chow halls and bring a box of fried chicken to the cop shop for the flight to eat for lunch.
Worst Moment Seeing two role model buck sergeants get busted for stealing a coffee pot from CBPO when they found it open on a weekend building check. They had figured that government property (coffee pot) had merely been relocated to the cop shop for our use...not larceny.
Spending the night in a shelter on-base to ride out a hurricane that passed nearby.
Other Memories First patrol vehicle were basic motor pool sedans and pick ups with a makeshift lightbar attached and a siren that sounded like an air raid siren. Dedicated special purpose police vehicles came along starting in 1978.
First time I pulled my revolver and it was off-base after SSgt J. Johnson pulled pursued drug suspects and called for back up. Biloxi PD came also and took them away.
Racial tensions were somewhat high during early seventies, especially off-base.
Drug use was also fairy frequent amoung the active duty. Got a lot of experience as a cop at Keesler.
The time a distraught man climbed a water tower with a rifle to shoot himself. TSgt G. Fender, my F/C, climbed tower and talked the guy down safely. He won airman's medal.
Or the time one pimp was chasing another pimp from Florida exchanging gunfire. Accidently made a turn off main highway and roared onto base. Night shift rounded them up. I came to work as dayshift D/S there were local, state and federal LEOs crowding the cop shop.
Then there was the night that one of our flight groupies (female WAFs who liked to hang with cops) got beat down pretty bad while walking to dorm by two civilian scum. I gave chase off-base. Biloxi P.D. stopped the suspect car nearby. Turns out they had a loaded handgun in the car, but fortunately did not try to use it.
