Memories For This Unit

Best Moment
Just being part of SAC and being young.

Worst Moment
I was working the flight line one night and we had to service the water injection tank on a B-52. The tank holds about 1,000 gallons and is used to increase thrust upon takeoff. My partner (I truly don't remember his name, but even if I did, I wouldn't mention it here!) climbed up onto the wing, flashlight in hand, while I manned the truck and filled out the paperwork. My partner lowered a rope down, I tied it onto the nozzle, and he pulled it up. Keep in mind that it was dark. He opened the receptacle and began servicing. I don't remember how much time passed, but we suddenly realized that it was taking an awfully long time. You guessed it. Upon closer examination we found that he had opened the forward body FUEL TANK and we had pumped hundreds of gallons of water into it. Sheer panic and terror came over us as we realized what we had just done. It was not a good feeling. We knew we had to report it immediately, and we did. The B-52 spent a few days in the hanger for the water to be drained from the fuel tank. Needless to say, my partner was busted a rank. It was indeed one of our worst moments.
