Memories For This Unit

Worst Moment
Aircraft and crew of eight lost to MIG attack 7 October 1952. No bodies recovered.
Vasily Saiko, a 24-year-old sergeant in the Soviet Maritime Border Guards, stood on the deck of his patrol vessel, watching the grim ballet above. Seconds later the Sunbonnet King crashed and exploded in soviet waters near the tiny Japanese island of Yuri. Saiko recovered one body (John Dunham) and it was buried on the island. BUT - Saiko removed and kept the Annapolis class ring. In 1992 he turned it over to US authorities.
