Best Friends 2 TDY assignments to Tan Son Nhut working on the flight line at Operation Lima Alpha Bravo (OLAB), 315th Air Division. No time to make long term friends.
Best Moment One night, I missed the last bus going to my billet (Tate Hall) off base in Saigon. I'm sitting on the curb outside the TSN Airman's Club and hear a bunch of guys talking as they passed me. I swore that I knew one of the voices so I run up to these guys and blurted out "Jack Satterwaithe". This guy turns around, looks at me and says "Tony?" (my brother's name). Jack was my neighbor growing up in Newark, New Jersey, and I hadn't seen him in about 5 years when my family moved to the suburbs. Lucky for me that I was able to sleep that night under a roof in his barracks. Anyone know Jack?
Worst Moment Several - getting too drunk many times. Almost got demoted for accidentally taking a Lt. General's jeep by mistake for an errand trip to PX in Cholon District of Saigon. I heard he was pretty pissed off that he had to return up country without his jeep. I'll never live that one down.
Other Memories Eating hamburgers almost every night for dinner for about 4 months at the USO so that I could save my TDY pay and combat pay. Actually, they were pretty darn good hamburgers.
I never got to wear the 315th Air Dvision's patch on my fatigues as I didn't know about it at the time of my 2 TDY tours to Tan Son Nhut - my PACAF patch covered it all.
