Captain Marshall served at Bien Hoa AB/Tan Son Nhut AB, RVN. On 5 September 1965, he was flying an A-1G (#132562), a 4 seat version. Flying with him was CWO2 William J. La Grand, US Army, a helicopter pilot with the 197th Aviation Company, 145th Aviation Battalion. The aircraft was seen to crash and no ejections were observed prior to impact. The area in which the aircraft went down was under hostile control at the time, and recovery and excavation attempts at the time were thwarted because of heavy enemy activity in the area and hostile presence. Both La Grand and Marshall were declared killed in action.
