His Silver Star citation:
Awarded for actions during World War II
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Stephen W. Andrew, United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane of the 7th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group, FIFTH Air Force, in action in the Darwin Area, Northern Territory, Australia, on 27 April 1942. On that date, Lieutenant Andrew shot down one enemy Zero and parachuted from his own damaged plane while 5 miles from shore.
