During WWII, then 2nd Lt. Robert Stuber was a B-17 bomber pilot serving with the 731st Bomb Squadron, 452nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force out of RAF Deopham Greene, Norfolkshire, England (AAF Station 142).
On 16 February 1945, he and his crew were shot down on what was his 2nd mission aboard B-17 (#43-38698). The aircraft was brought down at Sundern, Germany by German flak artillery (on mission # 201 over Hamm, Munster and Osnabruck). All of the crew survived and were taken POW. (MACR 12447). Lt. Stuber spent the remaining months as a POW imprisoned at Stalag Luft 3 Sagan-Silesia Bavaria (Moved to Nuremberg-Langwasser) 49-11 .

On 25 July 1948, 1st Lt. Charles H. King and 1st Lt. Robert W. Stuber were piloting a C-47B (#43-49534) from Wiesbaden-Erbenheim Airfield to Berlin-Tempelhof Airport as part of the Berlin Airlift effort to resupply the City of Berlin. At about 0100 hours, on approach to Tempelhof, the aircraft struck the top of a building and crashed into the street in front of an apartment building Handjery-Strasse 2, Berlin-Friedenau. Three people were injured on the ground. Both airmen were killed.
