Homestead AFB was a Strategic Air Command (SAC), Tactical Air Command (TAC), and an Air Defence Command (ADC) facility for many years, supporting B-47 and B-52 nuclear bombers, as well as fighter interceptor or attack aircraft.
It was home to air defense fighters and provided strip alert aircraft to defend against Cuban attacks as part of the overall air defense package for South Florida and the East Coast.
The base served as one of the critical staging points for the military buildup associated with the Cuban missile crisis and provided support facilities for many of the air defense missile units deployed to the region during the Cold War.
The 29th and the 31st MMS (and other munition units after 1978) served HAFB for many years, supplying ordnance for many units/groups in that area for a number of years.
