William Edward Worthy was born on June 3, 1933 in Chester, South Carolina. He enrolled at Clemson University in 1951, and graduated with a degree in Textile Manufacturing in 1955. He entered the military that same year.

Chosen for navigator training, he completed this training at Harlingen, Texas and Mather AFB, California. He was then assigned to the 96th Bomb Wing as navigator on a B-52. Later, he was sent to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio for the same duty.

He attended the University of Oklahoma, gaining an MBA degree. He was then transferred to the 50th Military Airlift Squadron where he performed the duty as navigator on a C-141. His next assignment was to the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Shaw AFB, South Carolina for transitional training in the EB-66 as Electronic Warfare Officer.

Upon completion of this training, he was assigned to the 42nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Takhli TRAFB, Thailand. He was en route to this station on July 10, 1970 when he was struck by a hit and run driver, suffering internal and head injuries. He was at the Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand on July 16, 1970 when he died of these injuries.

Major Worthy's body was returned home and he was buried in the Floence National Cemetery in Florence, South Carolina. He lies in Section E, Site 407.
