He was a pilot and a fierce advocate of pursuit/fighter aircraft in the 1930's when the emphasis was on high-altitude bombing. He is best known for his leadership of the American Volunteer Group or Flying Tigers in China.
He was awarded additional foreign medals that are not shown on his ribbon rack.
