After flying 100 combat missions in the South Pacific, the 25 year old pilot took off from Hillsgrove (TF Green) airport on the morning of November 29th 1944 on a training mission with at least two other P47s. He was around 35 miles from base when his engine quit. Anderson radioed he was having engine problems. Witnesses tell of seeing flames coming from his engine. Anderson bailed out but his chute didn't open. The plane crashed in Little Tavern Brook in Putnam, CT just off Route 44.
