Dwight Monteith was born on February 6, 1913, in Foley, Alabama. He entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1932, and was commissioned a 2d Lt in the Army Corps of Engineers on June 12, 1936. Lt Monteith next attended flying school and was awarded his pilot wings and transfer to the U.S. Army Air Corps in October 1937, followed by service with the 29th Pursuit Squadron at Albrook Field in the Panama Canal Zone from November 1937 to November 1939. He served as a pilot with the 38th Reconnaissance Squadron at March Field, California, from December 1939 to January 1941, and then served as Commander of the 6th Reconnaissance Squadron at March Field; Davis-Monthan Field, Arizona; Muroc Lake, California; Sacramento, California; and MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, from January 1941 to August 1942. Lt Col Monteith next served as Assistant A-3 for the 4th Bomber Command in San Francisco, California, from August 1942 to August 1943, followed by service as Deputy Commander of the 16th Wing at Davis-Monthan Field from August to October 1943. Col Monteith served as Commander of the 491st Bomb Group at Biggs Field, Texas, from October to December 1943, and then as Deputy A-3 of 20th Bomber Command at Smoky Hill Army Air Field, Kansas, from December 1943 to February 1944, and in India from February to July 1944. He then served as Commander of the Forward Echelon of 20th Bomber Command in China from July to December 1944, and as Chief of Staff of the 58th Bomb Wing in India from December 1944 to February 1945. Col Monteith served as Commander of the 58th Bomb Wing on Tinian in the Pacific Ocean from February to April 1945, and then served as Chief of Staff of the 58th Bomb Wing on Tinian from April to November 1945; at March Field, California, from December 1945 to May 1946; and at Forth Worth Army Air Field, Texas, from May to August 1946. After completing Air Command and Staff School at Maxwell Field, Alabama, in June 1947, Col Monteith remained on as an instructor and then Division Chief at the school until August 1950. His next assignment was as Chief of the Air Section of the U.S. Element on the NATO Planning Group in Paris, France, from August to December 1950, and on the SHAPE Advance Planning Group in Paris from December 1950 to March 1952. Gen Monteith next served as a Liaison Officer to NATO at Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Pentagon from June 1952 to August 1953, followed by service as the Air Force Member of the Chairman's Staff Group in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon from August 1953 to May 1955. He served as Deputy Air Force member of the Joint Strategic Plans Committee at Headquarters U.S. Air Force from June 1955 to August 1956, and then attended the National War College from August 1956 to July 1957. His next assignment was as Commander of the 3535th Navigator Training Wing at Mather AFB, California, from July 1957 to July 1959, followed by service as Chief of Staff for Air Training Command at Randolph AFB, Texas, from July 1959 to August 1961. Gen Monteith served as Commander of the Amarillo Technical Training Center at Amarillo AFB, Texas, from September 1961 to July 1964, and then as senior member of the Weapons System Evaluation Group in the Office of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon from July 1964 to September 1966. His next assignment was as Manager of Project CLOUD GAP with the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency with Headquarters U.S. Air Force from September 1966 to August 1967, followed by service as Commander of Lowry Technical Training Center at Lowry AFB, Colorado, from August 1967 until his retirement from the Air Force on August 1, 1971. Dwight Monteith died on February 9, 2005.

(Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Major General Dwight Oliver Monteith, United States Air Force, was awarded the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Commander, Lowry Technical Training Center, Lowry Air Force Base, Colorado, from 1967 to 1971. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Monteith culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his country and his dedicated contributions in the Service of his Country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
