1942-1942, AAF MOS 748, 95th Bombardment Squadron, Medium
Chain of Command Serving under overall command of LTC Doolittle, detached from 95th Bomb Squadron, 17th Bomb Group (Medium).
Other Memories Served as a Flight Engineer/Gunner on a B-25 Mitchell, training for the eventually famous "Doolittle Raid". After completing training at Eglin Field, Florida (near Pensacola) the unit transferred to Alameda NAS, California (near San Francisco) and loaded aboard the newest carrier in the U.S. Navy, USS Hornet (CV-8). They left port on April 2, 1942 and sailed to a rendezvous with the rather large Task Force 16 commanded by Vice Admiral William "Bull" Halsey. Due to being spotted by a Japanese picket boat the planes launched 10 hours and 200 miles early on April 18, 1942. After succesfully bombing the Japanese mainland his aircraft made it to safety by crash landing in Chuchow, China. The entire crew survived and were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
