He was a theorist of strategic air power, and proponent of an independent air force. He was a member of the "Bomber Mafia" whose influence led to the doctrine of daylight precision bombing during WWII. He was also an accomplished aviator and flight leader. He led the first operational group of B-17's which he led on goodwill tours of of South America which won him the MacKay and Harmon trophies. He also oversaw the development of standard operating procedures for the B-17. In WWII he did not command bombers in the field; instead his major contribution was creation and organization of the Air Corps Ferrying Command, delivered new aircraft to all parts of the globe, and which later became Air Transport Command and successors. He is also known for being the father of famous fighter ace Brig. Gen. Robin Olds.
He was cremated and his ashes were dispersed from a B-17 bomber. The Liberty Ship USS Major General Robert Olds was named in his honor.

Description The American Theater was a minor area of operations during World War II. This was mainly due to both North and South America's geographical separation from the central theaters of conflict in Europe and Asia. Thus, any threat by the Axis Powers to invade the mainland United States or other areas was considered negligible, allowing for American resources to be deployed in overseas theaters.
This article includes attacks on continental territory, extending 200 miles (320 km) into the ocean, which is today under the sovereignty of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and several other smaller states, but excludes military action involving the Danish territory of Greenland, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Aleutian Islands. The most well known battles in North America during World War II were the Attack on Pearl Harbor (the first attack on US soil since the Battle of Ambos Nogales), the Aleutian Islands Campaign, the Battle of the St. Lawrence, and the attacks on Newfoundland.
