He was a double ace in WWII.  He was credited with destroying 12 enemy aircraft in aerial combat plus 1 probable, 1 damaged, and 2.5 destroyed on the ground.

Synopsis of his DSC citation:
Awarded for actions during World War II
(Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Captain (Air Corps) Howard D. Hively (ASN: 0-88513), United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-51 Fighter Airplane in the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial combat against enemy forces on 2 July 1944, in the European Theater of Operations. On this date, for the second time, Captain Hively shot down THREE enemy aircraft in a single engagement. Captain Hively's unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 8th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
