He was serving as the Assistant Military Air Attache in American Embassy in London in 1926. Received this award for rescuing his fellow pilot from a burning aircraft in which they both had crashed south of London.
On September 21, 1926, Tinker and Commander Robert A. Burg, Assistant Naval Attache for Aviation, crashed their aircraft at Whyteleafe, near Caterham, in Surrey, about 10-15 miles south of London.
