Details Behind Award
distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-71 aircraft commander at Djamap Airfield, Republic of Vietnam, on 18 October 1970. On that date, Col. Caldwell flew three combat essential missions onto Djamap with ammunition; an area which had sustained periodic rocket attacks during the day. While Col. Caldwell and his crew were off-loading the ammuition, the airfield was subjected to another enemy rocket and mortar attack. Realizing the importance of his cargo to the friendly forces, Col. Caldwell elected to expeditiously off-load his cargo providing the friendly forces with badly needed ammunition, and then proceeded to make a tactical departure without damage to his aircraft or injury to his crew. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Col. Caldwell reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
