On July 19, 2010, authorities say, Mr. McClendon drove an electric scooter across U.S. 27 directly in the path of two vehicles. One managed to avoid him, the other didn't. Mr. McClendon was pronounced dead at West Marion Hospital.

Doyle B. McClendon
McCLENDON, Doyle B. 73, former resident of St. Petersburg, and Fairfax, VA, died Monday, July 19th, 2010 in Ocala. Mr. McClendon was born in Healdton, OK on Sept. 20th, 1936. He attended Healdton High School and the University of Oklahoma. In 1959, Mr. McClendon received his commission in the United States Air Force separating from the USAF in 1970 at the rank of Captain. Mr. McClendon eventually founded McClendon Corp. in Chantilly, VA in 1983. The company provided imagery science and engineering research/development services to many organizations in the Defense Department and Intelligence Community. He sold the company to L-1 Identity Solutions in 2007. Mr. McClendon was involved in many philanthropic pursuits including the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, the Florida Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Episcopal Cathedral, and the Al Downing Jazz Group. He served on the board of the Palladium, and was founder of the St. Petersburg Opera Company as well as a supporter of the Fairfax Choral Society and Habitat for Humanity. Mr. McClendon is survived by a son, William, of Annapolis, MD; and two sisters, Ruth Dronberger, of Hobbs, NM, and Patricia Parker of Hiram, GA. No services are pending.
