Captain Crowell graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1944, Cadet Company: C1.

At the beginning of the Korean War, he was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang night fighter with the 6146th Air Base Unit, U.S. Air Force and an advisor to the Korean Air Force (i.e. the 6146th Air Advisory Group, ROKAF). They were based at Seoul when he was killed.

The organization's primary mission was to train pilots and ground crews for the Republic of Korea's Air Force (ROKAF), but it also flew armed reconnaissance close air support missions. The group maintained its own aircraft and kept operational the airstrip at which it was based, which was often nearer the front lines than any other USAF unit.

"The organization's primary mission was to train pilots and ground crews for the Republic of Korea's Air Force (ROKAF), but it also flew armed reconnaissance close air support missions."

On 1 October 1950, while on a combat mission near Pyongyang, North Korea, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, crashed and burst into flames.

His remains were not recovered. Memorial stone erected in Arlington National Cemetery in his honor.
