On 17 December 1967, Major Robert Abernathy was serving as a copilot aboard an AC-47D (# 43-49492), on a courier flight between Tan Son Nhut and Phan Rang. Apparently, the aircraft was struck by groundfire during its night time flight. The wreckage was located on 23 December and the bodies of the nine men on board the aircraft were recovered.
He left a wife, Dorothy, and two children at his passing.
