1st Lt Charles Knowles was killed along with his crew aboard an AC-119G (tail #53-8155), call sign "Shadow 78". The aircraft was lost due to engine failure upon take off from Tan Son Nhut Airbase, Vietnam.
"Shadow 78" carried a normal crew of eight.: Lt. Thomas L. Lubbers; (AC commander) Lt. Charles M. Knowles; (co-pilot) Maj. Meredith Anderson (Navigator/NOS, ) Maj.
