Prior service with the U.S. Navy 1945-1953 in both active and reserve duty capacities.

Captain Cooper entered the Air Force in 1954 and completed pilot training by 1956.

Earlier in his career, Major Cooper served at RAF Upper Heyford, and with 509th Bomber Wing out of Pease AFB, flying the B-47.

He was killed serving as part of an air crew aboard a B-57. He flewout of Danang/Phan Rang ABs.

He was lost over Tay Ninh Province.
